Each season brings its own activities, offering incredible experiences in nature and the urban environment. Whether you are an avid outdoor person or a culture buff, North Savo provides a unique setting in every season.
Spring
In spring, the nature of North Savo stirs to life, and the region’s forests and meadows are filled with flowers and greenness. Spring is an ideal time for birdwatching and hiking on nature trails, as nature awakes from hibernation. The fishing season also starts, and many natural waters, such as Lake Kallavesi in Kuopio, beckon fishers and canoeists to enjoy the spring sunshine.
Summer
Summer in North Savo is full of events, festivals and outdoor activities. The lakes in the region, such as Kallavesi, are excellent for swimming, boating and water skiing. Open-air summer theatres and music festivals such as Kuopio Rock and Iisalmi Blues, light up the cultural scene in the region. In summer, you can also enjoy the nightlife on the lively terraces in Kuopio and sample local delicacies from vendors in the Market Square.
Autumn
Autumn brings with it the blazing colours of the autumn foliage and is a great time for hikes and nature walks. The forests in North Savo are full of berries and mushrooms, appealing to all friends of nature’s bounty. Hunting is another popular activity during the autumn season. The cultural scene continues to flourish in autumn with theatre performances and concerts, and you can also experience local traditions, such as farmers’ markets.
Winter
Winter in North Savo is a magical time when the region is covered under a blanket of snow and the lakes and rivers freeze over. The conditions are perfect for winter sports, such as skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. The ski resorts of Tahko and Kasurila are popular among skiers and snowboarders. You can also enjoy traditional smoke saunas and ice swimming, which provide a refreshing contrast to the cold winter weather.
